Pilates for Men
I have male clients coming to my classes. That might be enough to convince you to come along and try Pilates; then again it might not.
I’ll try to dispel any wrong ideas (posh stretching?) about Pilates for men because Pilates was a man after all.
Joseph H Pilates was a boxer, gymnast and circus performer. That’s just my pick from a very long list of his talents and abilities.
The first customers at his New York studio were local boxers and athletes who sought him out because of his skills and reputation.
If you’re interested in finding out which athletes practice Pilates, a quick search online brings up international athletes, cricketers and footballers who use Pilates as part of their fitness and wellness regime. Lynne Robinson (co-founder of Body Control Pilates) has current and past clients within the FA, the England Cricket Team and Chelsea Football Club.
Pilates can be restorative, rehabilitative and gentle. It can also be incredibly intense and dynamic.
All of the fundamentals of Pilates apply to both men and women – they are absolutely not gender specific.
If you are concerned with building muscle, Pilates won’t do that for you, but;
- It will increase your flexibility, strength and stability, so as you build muscle in the gym you will have greater range of movement and control
- Your body will be balanced rather than over developed in any one area
- You’ll learn to use your muscles and your breath correctly – you’ll be safer, helping you to avoid injuries
Pilates lengthens the muscles which are taut and affect your ideal posture and strengthens the deep, architectural muscles of the body.
So, you’ll look taller – because you will be standing, sitting and moving taller.
The balance that Pilates brings doesn’t just mean you’ll have better physical coordination, control, balance and learn to stand and squat (on one leg).
Pilates exercises really work the invisible muscles, normally forgotten about or ignored. You’re building strength from the inside out, helping to build a balanced physique.
Pilates teaches you to concentrate and focus through breath and movement; connecting your mind to your body, relieving stress and tension bringing balance into your whole life.
Pilates really is perfect for everybody and every body.
